The August Garden Handoff

What to plant now while summer is still filling the kitchen.
This week, my kitchen counter became the tomato holding zone.
Some tomatoes were ready to eat immediately. Others needed another day or two. A few were already telling me not to wait.
That is August in a food garden: the summer harvest is still arriving, while the fall garden is already asking for space.
Picture of the Week

This week’s harvest included tomatoes at several stages of ripeness, along with a few peppers. August is when harvesting, kitchen planning, and fall planting all begin competing for attention.
While the tomatoes were telling me what needed to come out of the garden, the open spaces outside were asking a different question:
What should go into the soil next?
Five vegetables to consider planting in August
Kale and collards for dependable cool-season leaves
Turnips for both greens and roots
Beets for edible leaves, stems, and roots
Swiss chard for changing late-summer temperatures
Carrots while their planting window is still open
You do not need to plant all five. Choose one crop your household will actually eat and one space you can keep consistently watered.
The timing lesson
Carrots now. Spinach later.
Carrots need time to establish before shorter autumn days slow their growth. Spinach usually performs better once the soil begins to cool.
August gardening is not about planting everything at once. It is about protecting the planting windows that are beginning to close.
Your 15-Minute Garden Goal
Find one empty or declining area.
Choose one crop your household will actually eat.
Prepare the soil—or plant it if the timing is right.
You do not need to rebuild the whole garden. You only need to begin the next season.
